North End Arts Rising, Inc. (NEAR) is a non-profit arts organization located in the Historic North End District of Middletown. Known as The Buttonwood Tree (TBT), we serve the community by providing unique arts programming in the areas of visual art, music, poetry, dance and more.

We have a bookstore with a collection of rare and old finds with a small coffee/tea concession. Our performance gallery space holds up to 49 patrons legally if the piano is in the “stage” area. If the piano is in the back of the room we seat 35-40. Sometimes we have had over 60 guests throughout the show. We offer a great space with fantastic acoustics. Many musicians say this is one of their favorite rooms to play. The atmosphere is intimate, cozy, casual and unique. Standing room is also available. Often patrons will leave after intermission, and this leaves room for others to come in, which they often do.

Our performances are usually on a “suggested donation” basis. We generally honor a range of $3-$15 suggested donation at the door for events. These door donations are then split between NEAR and the Artist (50/50). Artists keep 100% of all merchandise sales. For shows with opening performers these ratios may be different. We do not turn anyone away for his or her inability to pay. This is part of the philosophy we preserve that our founders have based this community arts and cultural center on. We also offer the convenience of reserving seats – done through our website. We are grateful for any contributions of cds which we sell here and will help to further get your music out, and help us financially.

We provide printed and online calendars to our patron list and send press releases to newspapers and radio stations. We will supply you with a list of radio stations that are in our area if you wish to contact them directly with your promotional information and/or to arrange for an interview. This has proven to be a big help toward gathering an audience, especially for touring artists.

Below is a list of what our acoustic venue has available:

  • Baby Grand Piano
  • 6 microphones and cables (3 vocal, 3 instrument)
  • 16 Channel Sound Board with amp
  • 2 Mackie Floor Speakers with stands
  • 5 Mic stands
  • 1 Music stand
  • 6 Conga Drums
  • Projection Screen 8’x12’, shelf for projector

NOTE: We are not a B.Y.O.B. facility.

Coffee, tea, water, wine & packaged snacks are available. There are many restaurants nearby.

We prefer to do (2) 45 minute sets with a generous intermission, starting up at your preference. We will introduce the band (unless you rather we don’t) and offer the musicians complimentary beverages and snacks. We have water, wine, soft drinks, coffee and tea available.
