1.Yeats, William Butler, The Trembling of the Veil.
London 1922.T.Werner Laurie, LTD. SIGNED, limited edition. NF/G Large 8vo. #302/1000
The Trembling of the Veil is dedicated to Yeats' Irish-American patron, John Quinn. Quinn was a great benefactor to artists of the avant garde as an art collector and patron. The first part, Book I: Four Years: 1897-91 had already been published by the important small press Cuala Press. which was founded and managed by Yeats, his sisters and socialist-feminist Evelyn Gleeson at the beginning of the century. All of the other chapters had previously appeared in periodicals such as The London Mercury and the Dial. The manuscript was amplified and edited in Thoor Ballylee. In June it was sent to the publisher T. Werner Laurie in London against an advance of £500.
The Trembling of the Veil takes its title from a line by the French symbolist poet, Stephen Mallarme which Yeats had heard and written down many years before, at a reading given by the writer/historian Arthur Symons: " The whole age is troubled by the trembling of the veil of the Temple." The idea behind this phrase gives unity and direction to what might otherwise appear to be a somewhat disconnected reminiscence on the lives and works of many of the writers and other artists, notably painters, with whom Yeats was professionally involved in England, France and Ireland in the decade of the 90's.
Yeats saw this period as a critical one in the spiritual history of the human race. For him it embodies a transition from an era of "subjective strength" in the arts to one in which the world-soul is dominated by science. The triumphant cult of objectivity and abstraction had led, in his estimation, to the barbarism of the 20th century.
This copy was previously owned by poet/playwrite Tony Connor and has "J.A.C." for John Anthony Connor, written on the inside rear of DJ. In 1964, Tony Connor was an up and coming young poet of the time, living in Yorkshire, England, newly wed to an Irish wife . He received a visit from family relation, Jack Dudgeon, a doctor also resident in Yorkshire. Dudgeon' s wife had studied at Trinity College in Dublin in the 20's, and done volunteer work for the Cuala Press. It was through this connection that she'd obtained her copy of The Trembling of the Veil .The couple bestowed the book upon Tony as a gift and tribute to his accomplishments and standing as a young poet.
In time Tony felt it was only right that the book be passed along in the same spirit. In 1989 Tony, as acclaimed poet and playwright, and professor of English at Wesleyan University, gave the copy to the newly opened Ibis Books & Gallery. Susan Allison sold the volume to her parents until she could afford to buy it back. The funds were used to help finance the beginnings of what would become The Buttonwood Tree. May this copy of The Trembling of the Veil continue in its noble task of opening up the "invisible gates", thereby rending the veil of illusion and bringing about the soul's union with an ultimate and abiding reality. -Description provided by Roy Lisker
