Tuesday, February 21, 10 am
Chuck Obuchowski live interview with Laszlo Gardony -  WWUH -91.3fm

* Trio features Gardony, John Lockwood, and Yoron Israel *

“Gardony is a formidable soloist who lives in the moment.” — JazzTimes

“Signature Time has style, imagination and beauty, both on Gardony’s original compositions and on his imaginatively reworked versions of standards. The album enhances the reputation of every one of the musicians and re-affirms the talents of Gardony himself.” – Bruce Lindsay, All About Jazz

“No one has a better feeling for mixing strong grooves and melodic lyricism than pianist Laszlo Gardony.” — Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix

Renowned jazz pianist/composer Laszlo Gardony, “one of contemporary music’s truly original voices” (JazzTimes), will perform with his trio on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Buttonwood Tree, 605 Main St., Middletown, CT. Joining Gardony is the trio from his latest CD, “Signature Time” (Sunnyside): bassist, John Lockwood, and drummer Yoron Israel.

Following the release of his ninth album, Signature Time (Sunnyside), Hungarian-born Gardony had a busy fall schedule with 14 concerts – including an engagement at NYC’s famed Birdland Jazz Club – as well as his regular teaching work at Berklee College of Music where he serves as a professor. Signature Time has earned wide acclaim.

“The rapport the three have [Gardony, Lockwood, and Israel] is palpable, making the music come alive… It’s hard to sit still while this music fills the room – everyone plays so well without hogging the spotlight.”   – Richard Kamins, Step Tempest

“Although [Gardony] gleefully stretches rhythm, harmony and melody into all sorts of new shapes and colors, his music is pleasantly accessible.” – Owen McNally, Hartford Courant

“Balance is the key to this album’s success. The pitch-perfect fusion of styles and tempos makes ‘Signature Time’ a definite winner” – Terrell Holmes, New York City Jazz Record

Gardony has brought his soulful improvisations to audiences in 23 countries. Winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, he has been called “a pianist worthy of praise within the highest pantheon of performers” by Jazz Review.com and “a great pianist” by Dave Brubeck. After graduating from the Bela Bartok Conservatory and the Science University of Budapest, Gardony worked as a much sought-after sideman in Europe where he released his first recordings as a leader. He then matriculated to Berklee College of Music on a full-scholarship, and joined the faculty after graduation. Among the prominent figures Gardony has worked with are Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Mick Goodrick, David “Fathead” Newman, Bob Moses, Matt Glaser and Jamey Haddad, while Randy Brecker and Dave Liebman have appeared as guest soloists with his trio. Gardony has also been featured with the Boston Pops, the Utah Symphony and The Smithsonian Institute’s “Beyond Category” Traveling Duke Ellington Exhibit.

JOHN FUNKHOUSER TRIO

by annemarie
 8 pm  $15

The John Funkhouser Trio will be playing all original music, some new, some old. Together for over 6 years, this telepathic band inhabits its own created musical universe, taking jazz as its starting point, but painting in so many colors and feelings that to try to categorize it would be folly. Think James Brown meets Chopin meets Zappa meets Philip Glass, or better yet, just come and find out for yourself.

“BLESSINGS” Film sponsored by the Buddhist Faith Film series

by annemarie
In honor of Women’s History Month– and because it is a great film– The Buddhist Faith Fellowship is offering  “Blessings”  as the March film.
7 pm. FREE    (suggested donation of $5)
Blessings is narrated by Richard Gere, filmed in Tibet, offers an interesting history lesson — and rare view into nunneries in Tibet-

Blessings: The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns of Tibet tells the story of 3000 nuns living in the remote nomadic region of Nangchen in Eastern Tibet who practice an ancient yogic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Despite near extinction during the destruction of the Cultural Revolution, these remarkable spiritual practitioners have emerged to rebuild their monasteries by hand – stone by stone. Now, their tradition of wisdom and compassion is once again vital and growing. In 2005, Tsoknyi Rinpoche III led a small group of western students to meet the Nangchen nuns. Blessings is the story of this extraordinary journey. A unique meeting of East and West, the film is an inspiration to anyone seeking a spiritual path through the challenges of 21st century life.

Double Bill: Humble Tripe and Carolann Ames

by annemarie
8 pm   $10.
HUMBLE TRIPE:
Durham, NC’s Humble Tripe came to form as the music project of Shawn
Luby.  Luby, who spent 15 years as a young competitive classical
guitar player, walked away from performance at age 20.  He emerged ten
years later as a song writer, perfecting the combination of haunting
musical sensibility with equally matched insight into the stories of
the human heart. He is joined by Berklee College of Music graduate,
Stud Green, on violin and mandolin, and Jess Shell on percussion
instruments including the gamalon, tamborine, and melodica.

Website Link: humbletripe.com

Humble Tripe brings its acoustic music to the Northeast, delighting
audiences with a performance that is sure to be an emotionally
moving, captivating and memorable experience.

Combining modern americana/folk/pop with the delicacy and movement
found in their classical roots, Humble Tripe embraces tender,
plaintive melodies that waver between introspection and jubilance,
capturing the liminality of love, exhilaration, and the many spaces in
between.

Quote:

“The voice of Shawn Luby, who leads Humble Tripe, is rich like loam,
its low tones gilded above by incandescent flashes of something a bit
feminine. Think a sonorous young dylan migrating to Anacortes, Wash.,
and singing with more soul than everybody else in that lo-fi land.”
–Independent Weekly, Durham, NC
