Wing Chun Study Group
Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art based on the yin/ yang and Taoism whose techniques emphasize practicality and efficiency to maintain its ideals on effectiveness. Training in Wing Chun aims at becoming one with the ever-expanding awareness of what is. In it you will find all the tools to be successful in self- defense and meditation, and all around good health and fitness. As you progress though your development in Wing Chun you will learn sense perception as well as physical perception. As you simplify your movement more and more you return to the "state of Wu Wei". Wu Wei means "non action"- spontaneity and emptiness of cosmic mind. Wu Wei is a central concept in Taoism, meaning "action with out action" or effortless doing. The goal is to align Wu Wei with the Tao, revealing the soft "yin" and the unseen power with all things, "yang". Efficiency in Wing Chun is based on the concept that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Likewise its primary targets all lie along the "centerline" of one's opponent.
Van Green, a Middletown resident, has studied Oriental Arts and Sciences for over 14 yrs. He studied under Dr. Daniel K. Pai (founder of Pai-lum Kung-Fu) who was one of Bruce Lee's teachers in the 60's.

Heather Maloney Trio
Folk Rock Indie Pop
Heather began her career writing songs and performing as a jazz singer with Grammy nominee Hui Cox in New York City. Just as her career started to take off she booked it up to the words of Massachusetts to delve deeper into her growing interest in meditation. While living and working at a meditation retreat center the songs from her debut album Cozy Razor's Edge slowly brewed in her solitude; a compilation of Folk, Rock, World and Americana songs directly inspired by her experiences and her desire to awaken and live life alive. Cozy Razor's Edge was released in November has been receiving rave reviews from the press. The Montague Reporter said "Heather Maloney's new CD, Cozy Razor's Edge is equal in quality to the work of many of the stars of our time" “Maloney writes evocative music that urges peace and harmony and boasts full-bodied, knock you dead vocals" said The Advocate (Northampton MA.) The Greenfield Recorder wrote"Cozy Razor's Edge is a stylistically diverse work that showcases Maloney's beautiful vocals and lyrics that range from the personal to the profound"
Maloney has proven herself as a skilled songstress and singer, and a powerhouse performer; she uses her heartfelt intelligent lyrics, humor, spirited musicality and joyful performances to offer tales of love, self inquiry and the human experience. Her songs are like those classic stories that you can read repeatedly and come away with something new every time.
She will be joined by guitarist Joe Boyle who has played with Peter Tork, Frank Manzi and is one of the most sought after session players around. On the upright bass will be Wes Brown, who is part of the seminal band the Black Rebels and has played with some of the biggest names in jazz and folk!

African Drumming, Storytelling and Didgeridoo
"Imakhu and Worldwind" - Return to TBT for an encore presentation!
The masterful drumming and didgeridoo was captivating and riveting. I highly recommend this performance for all ages. This cultural experience was educational as well as thoroughly entertaining. Imakhu tells stories of ancient folklore and from her own past, leading us to uncharted territories where both mystery and humor are revealed.
Veteran performer Imakhu and didgeridoo artist Evan "WorldWind" Smith team up to create music magic. A one-of-a-kind duo performing fusion bellydance, soulful vocals & masterful storytelling, with indigenous music. Imakhu is African-American w/ African, Caribbean, Cherokee & Gullah ancestry. WorldWind is Jamaican born. Together, they represent a spectrum of African stirring diaspora songs, sounds & moves.
Imakhu has often performed in schools captivating young audiences, and we are quite fortunate to have her here at Buttonwood. We hope you don't miss this opportunity to share some cultural experiences with your children!
All are invited to participate through singing and dancing or playing any of the varied instruments they bring.
Join us for some fun!

FUND-RAISER FOR HAITI - SUSAN CAMPBELL - Booksigning and BENEFIT CONCERT by GALE GARDINER
A DATE WITH LOVE - Join us as we show our love for others - by raising money for the people of Haiti, by appreciating the artistic genius of our friends here and by gathering together in fellowship with song and food. O'Rourke's Diner has graciously donated some desserts for us.
SUSAN CAMPBELL will be here to read, chat and sign her book, Dating Jesus. She is an award-winning columnist at the Hartford Courant and has created a delightfully humorous book. Even if you don't like to read, come listen!
In January, her book, “Dating Jesus: A Story of Fundamentalism, Feminism, and the American Girl,” came out from Beacon Press in paperback and will be available.
"... Her writing cuts to the quick and slices to the bone, thereby cleaning and healing old wounds for every woman who's struggled to find acceptance within, and without, conventional religion." — Regina Barreca, author of "Babes in Boyland"
Joining us for a musical presentation will be GALE GARDINER - performing songs from her CD "Timeless Love" with autoharp, piano and guitar...
THE CONCERT WILL BE RECORDED! (Thank you Michael Arafeh of the Coffeehouse Recording Studio)
After Gale, we welcome other musicians to perform and offer their CDs for sale - with proceeds going to our fund-raiser. Gardiner's vocals were reminiscent of Joni Mitchell: haunted and plaintive." Dan Barry Hartford Advocate Dec. 18, 2008

Double Bill! Abi Tapia & Jen Lowe
Abi migrated to Austin, Texas in 2002, where she quickly rooted herself in the city’s thriving live music scene. With its blend of country sincerity, cosmopolitan snap and plethora of skilled pickers, she continued maturing and developing her own style. Along the way she picked up awards and recognition for her songwriting from The Wildflower Music Festival, Austin Songwriters Group and the Kerrville Folk Festival. The inviting warmth of the South, the expansiveness of the Midwestern Plains, the pluck and determination of a New England Yankee and a Texan’s independent spirit all come together in Abi’s “wanderlusty” music (a term she proudly displays on her guitar strap).
JEN LOWE - Having toured with prestigious national and international artists, Lowe is a journey-woman through and through. The songs on her debut solo CD, “From the End of this Hallway”, play like bittersweet battle-cries of a great victory won against fallen relationships and personal struggles in a coming-of-age war. And when the dust settles, there’s the lone voice of Jen’s soul, swaying gently, beautifully, between each song like a feather dropping from the heavens between the limbs of Oak trees.
Jen’s eternal search for balance and connection in her life comes through strongly in her writing and performance. Never taking herself too seriously in life or on the stage, you will often find her giggling and at ease as she tells a funny anecdote or reaches into her soul to share the darker parts of her journey. She is a true natural performer, whether she’s pounding ferociously on a djembe or gently finger-picking her old guitar; as a multi-instrumentalist, Jen’s shows are spontaneous, fun and never predictable. And it truly resonates. Her stage presence, songwriting, and musical ability have instantly captured audiences from state to state. www.jenlowe.com

Saturday Night Jazz - Jen Allen Jazz Trio
Jen Allen is one of the most respected jazz pianists and composers working in New England today. A native of the Boston area, Jen has studied with Jackie McLean, Harold Danko, Michael Weiss and Andy Laverne, and earned a Bachelors of Music in African American Music from the Hartt School at the University of Hartford in 2000. Since that time, her music has taken her around the world, as she has performed in Japan, Turkey, and many renowned American venues.
Jen frequently performs in the solo setting, as the leader of her trio, and as a sideman with jazz luminaries such as Nat Reeves, Charles Flores and Kris Allen. She currently teaches at Trinity College and maintains a busy private teaching studio.
Currently residing in West Hartford, Jen is beginning work on her first solo album entitled Pieces of Myself, and will be performing some new original compositions from it.
Jen has started performing again after a 4 year sabbatical - receiving back a piece of life that had been put aside after becoming a new mom. The last several years for Jen have been filled with the struggles of being a wife, mother, friend, and artist, and all these struggles have found expression in her music. Her songs paint a picture of the balancing act we all do as well as pointing to a furious longing we all share: the need to believe there is more to life than what we already know and see. Her hope is that these songs will inspire us all to know the beauty and fullness of life in the good, the bad, and even the mundane.
Jen is bringing an exciting young trio with her including bassist Matt Dwonszyk and drummer Joe Palmer to bring alive Pieces of Myself.

In 2004 he took first seat in the 57th Annual Basho Anthology Contest in Ueno, Japan and 3rd place in the Kaji Aso Contest in Boston. In 2001 he was the recipient of the Museum of Haiku Literature Award, given by the Museum in Tokyo and the Haiku Society of America. Most recently he has received an artist fellowship from the Greater Hartford Arts Council. He has been a judge for the Japan Society and the United Nations International School’s Children’s Haiku Contest in the New York City Region for four years.

John Popielaski attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook and American University. Prior to discovering that his passion was teaching, John entertained the idea of becoming a lawyer, however he was disillusioned with the endless monotony of paperwork that the job would entail. Many of his poems have been published in literary journals, and he has been the recipient of a fellowship from the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Catherine Epright, AIFD (American Institute of Floral Designers) brings us her artistry of natural materials. Including works of 3-D assemblage art, celebrating elements, textures, patterns and themes found within nature.
This local artist is hewn from the Stuff of New England. Her artistic style is firmly rooted in Floral Design, yet she is branching out beyond the world of the ephemeral to explore other avenues of more permanent expression with an emphasis on Ingenuity.
This show is a culmination of techniques and concepts refined by her recent “Artistic Residency” at Klekolo World Coffee (where her works have been exclusively displayed the past 8 months.) February’s show will feature “functional” works of art including timepieces, sun catchers and jewelry and is the only showing she has committed to for 2010.

Harpeth Rising (formerly Sisters Grimm)
Harpeth Rising is the next incarnation of a previous group called Sisters Grimm and hails from Nashville, Tennessee. They will be treating us to a show on their way to clubs up and down the East Coast. Don't miss their only CT performance!
They play a blend of classical, bluegrass, celtic and folk music and call it "Neograssiclassicana."
Harpeth Rising is something new. Their sound, comprised of violin, banjo, cello and drums is both recognizable and undefinable. Jordana Greenberg (violin, vocals,) and Rebecca Reed-Lunn (banjo, vocals,) started the band as just a duo under the name Sisters Grimm, busking their way across the United States in the summer of 2007. They then spent a year on Maui, performing, writing songs and developing their sound. Within their short stay in Hawaii, they were featured in Maui Times, Maui News, Maui Weekly, and made numerous live recordings for Mana’o Radio. They returned to the Mainland in 2008, moving to Nashville, TN. It was their great fortune that two of their friends and fellow musicians from Indiana University moved to Memphis around the same time. Ruth Valente Burgess (cello) and Christopher Burgess (hand drums) became permanent members of the band, creating the group that would become Harpeth Rising. The quartet performs regularly throughout the United States, drawing audiences in with music that is somehow timeless and still utterly unique. Their debut album, Harpeth Rising, is a collection of passionate, intricately arranged original songs. They are crying for change, questioning the past, and tracking down the revolution, via delicate harmonies and blazing instrumentals.
Jordana Greenberg, violin/vocals . . Rebecca Reed-Lunn, banjo/vocals . . Ruthie Valente Burgess, cello . . (of the Hartford Symphony) Christopher Burgess, acoustic drums
You can view their EPK and listen to tracks from their debut album here: www.sonicbids.com/harpethrising or at their Myspace page.

Creative Writing Workshop
Hello fellow writers!
Have you always wanted to write that great story that’s been locked inside your head but you don't know where to start? This one-day workshop will help you not only unlock that story, but make the writing experience fun and exciting! Join me on Saturday, March 6, 2010 for a three-hour, hands-on workshop that will set you on your way to writing your novel. Here we will begin at the very beginning of the process of writing your novel, that is, the inception of your idea. Then we will work through drafting a plot sentence, developing an intimate relationship with your main characters, drafting an ending to your story, blocking out your chapters and finally, writing that all important first line of the first chapter of your novel. It may seem daunting to have to do all this work before even writing the first line, but if we can accomplish this in three hours, imagine what you can do when you are actually writing your novel.
In this workshop, we will also explore important poetic techniques that will help you to write more concisely, build more tangible images, and create more colorful and intriguing narrative and dialogue!
Often, when we decide we want to write a novel, we become overwhelmed with the enormity of it. This workshop will alleviate that pressure, allowing you to actually enjoy the process of writing.
All of this for only $15! In these hard economic times, there is no reason you can’t fulfill your creative desires! Registration is required, so email me to register at EileenRain@aol.com.

Jeff Blaney and Willie Larsen - Americana, Blues, Country
Jeff Blaney is a gifted musician and a hard working songwriter who relocated to Nashville in July 2008. He plays the guitar and mandolin and has been writing, recording and performing music for inspired audiences since the age of fifteen. Jeff's love for traveling the country has allowed him to perform in many venues from The Coconut Teaser on Sunset Blvd. to The Sidewalk Cafe in Manhattan. Jeff was lucky to land a gig after only two weeks living in Nashville, playing mandolin for the Nashville Dinner Theatre Company. Currently he is working on producing an album and playing his mandolin for talented Nashville songwriter Luke Amelang.
Jeff has been a part of musical projects which include: - The Blaney Bros - Pie (winner of best blues band 2004 in The Hartford Advocate) - 19 Strings with Willie Larsen - Backtalk - Mike Tierney & Friends and many more...
Jeff's musical history songbook is deep, including songs of country, blues, Celtic, bluegrass, funk, reggae and rock. Jeff took the opportunity to record with Willie Larsen on a CD with 8 of Willie's original songs. These songs are funny and heartfelt - songs calling back to Willie's past and the loss of his wife, Beth. On the song, 'I'm Worried About You', "It is difficult to sing sometimes," Willie says. "I'm talking to her in heaven when I sing that song." When I sing, "I'm worried about you, are you worried about me," it could not come from anywhere but the heart. Other songs include 'Won't You Come Out Tonight','I Met A Girl' and 'Shut Up Girl' - all about lost loves from relationships wanting to work but never to be.
Willie Larsen has a long musical background in many areas such as acting, singing, songwriting, finger-picking guitar as well as square dance calling and teaching. Since the early 1970's when in high school in East Haven, CT, Willie has been traveling throughout New England, upstate New York and New Jersey - calling dances and singing and playing guitar when ever he has the chance.

Jann Klose - Acoustic 'Pop Rock'
Born in Germany, raised in Nairobi, Kenya and Johannesburg, South Africa, Jann spent his teenage years in Hamburg, Germany before coming to Cleveland, Ohio as an exchange student. He returned to Germany, to fulfill mandatory civil service, and then relocated to Northeast Ohio, where he studied voice with Emmy winner David Gooding, sang in the Cleveland Opera Chorus, and released two CDs on local label G21 Records.
In 2000 Jann relocated to New York. He has since performed in Broadway touring companies of JEKYLL & HYDE and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR as well as a regional production of The Who's TOMMY (NJPAC).
In addition to radio airplay and extensive touring in the U.S. and Europe - over 200 shows since 2008 - Jann and his band have been receiving positive press for REVERIE:
“The first thing that's totally unmistakable about Jann Klose is that voice - which is just light years beyond that of the typical singer/songwriter … a sound that is classy, distinctive and often irresistible.” - Advance Newspaper Wire Service, MassLive.com
Since the release of REVERIE, Jann and his band have been on the road almost non-stop both in the U.S. and Europe, supporting Renaissance on its nine-date, 40th anniversary tour that included shows in prestigious venues including Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal, The Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia, The Birchmere in Alexandria, and NYC's Concert Hall. He collaborated on stage at New York City's B.B. King Blues Club with members of the Rolling Stones' horn section, Alan Parsons Project, and Dire Straits for its third annual salute to George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh, raising funds to fight cancer. In September of 2008 Jann and his bassist Chris Marolf performed with Rosanne Cash, Marty Stuart and Roger McGuinn at the Martin Guitar 175th anniversary concert at The State Theatre in Pennsylvania.

Free at Last Players - Theater / Stand-up / Improv
The Free at Last Players is a not-for-profit theater group dedicated to dispelling the myths and misconceptions that surround mental illness and substance dependency. Founded in 1989, the group has performed all over Connecticut and the United States with shows consisting of songs, poems and skits created by the group’s members. By showcasing their first-hand perspectives via performance art, the Free at Last Players combat this misunderstanding. The group consists of members who recognize that every person deserves to be seen as just that: a person. With strengths and weaknesses just like anyone else. As they celebrate their 20th anniversary, The Free At Last Players continue to reach out to new groups who might benefit from and/or appreciate the group’s message. Finding in performance art a labor of love, The Free at Last Players make the world a more accepting place – one audience at a time."

Saturday Night Jazz - Sinan Bakir
Sinan Bakir is one of the most unique and exciting young jazz guitarists. The sound that Sinan is striving for described often as fresh, clean and lively yet intense and full with emotion. Sinan Bakir is hailed not only as a virtuoso player, but also a masterful composer. His album "On My Way" with Thomson Kneeland and Mark Ferber is described by Richard Kamins of Hartford Courant as a solid debut." It's easy to put this music on and just let it play. One can hear the influences of Holdsworth, John Scofield and Bill Frisell but Bakir is no imitator. The voice of the guitar one hears on the opening cut never wavers or falters throughout." Dan Barry of Hartford Advocate describes Sinan's playin' as quietly elaborate, informed by a good sense of when to crescendo and when to lean back and let it rip. Dither Schmidth of Radio Resita tells that the album transforms a common day into a perfect day and calls it magical. On My Way - Sinan Bakir (self-released) - Bakir, born and raised in Turkey, came to the United States to study guitar after completing his college studies in engineering. His studies brought him to Hartford and he has slowly but steadily begun to make a name on the Connecticut jazz scene. "On My Way" is a solid debut. It's easy to put this music on and just let it play. One can hear the influences of Holdsworth, John Scofield and Bill Frisell but Bakir is no imitator. The voice of the guitar one hears on the opening cut never wavers or falters throughout. The rhythm section is impressive in their support and creativity. Sinan Bakir is a good young composer and player worth your attention." Richard Kamins - Hartford Courant

Kenn Morr Band
Kenn's gifts to the rest of us are his songs, which push boundaries while recalling a time when the world was a simpler place. His music has a dreamy, simple quality that hearkens back to a time when American music and life was less complicated yet just as strongly felt. Bob Dylan's brand of acoustic rock is referenced by Kenn's low persuasive tones, and traces of John Mellencamp are recognizable in the songs' heartfelt quality and accessibility. The lyrics address universal themes such as love, fear, cautiousness and curiosity and speak to everyman. Even Kenn's newest songs feel like they've existed forever and embody the time transcending quality of art that is truly organic. Never are Kenn's talents more palpable than in his live show. Often accompanied by his band manning a revolving lineup of instruments including violin, mandolin, organ, banjo and drums, Kenn performs triple duty on guitar, piano & harmonica. An evening spent with Kenn Morr feels intimate no matter what size the venue and he has performed with such kindreds as John Wesley Harding and Aztec Two-Step. The latter are such big fans they recorded a version of Kenn's song "Follow The Moon." Kenn's songs echo that uncomplicated kindness and the resilience of the human spirit. A master of metaphor, he shines at making broad gestures with the tiniest of phrases and exemplifies that the fewest words and simplest melodies often offer the most sweeping images and emotional resonance.

Anne and Pete Sibley
For Anne and Pete it is the simplicity of the music: the words, the vocals, the harmonies. The storytelling and intimate nature of their originals has drawn in fans and encouraged the husband and wife duo to keep delivering. They aren’t afraid of making music that is personal, paring it down, being true to their instincts. The audiences and the communities and the correspondence from their fans in five short years has made it so rewarding for the couple. Raised in New England singing in choirs, studying all types of music except folk and bluegrass, the Sibleys stumbled upon their true calling when they moved out West to the land of the Tetons. They consider this music the people’s music, nature’s music and they sing it freely and graciously.
In the past five years they have released many well-received albums (including one for Christmas) and just celebrated their newest release Coming Home in April 2009 at the same time as winning A Prairie Home Companion’s Duet Sing Off on National Public Radio.
Of Will You Walk With Me, Bluegrass Now writes, “What emerges front and center are the couple’s transcendent harmonies, vocal renditions that embellish already artful songwriting." They have also self-published a songbook of their original music.
CD Baby editors reviewing Coming Home think the Sibleys voices go together like milk and honey saying, “this duo makes a strong case for the argument that there's nothing better than unadorned, unaffected human voices.”
