Kids Arts History
More on Kids Arts later …
KIDS ARTS Summer Camp is a 5 week program that has been successfully run in Middletown for many years. The Middletown Commission on the Arts has partnered with NEAR (North End Arts Rising, Inc.) We have up to 60 class seats; this year we had 56 on the final roster after several families changed their plans. Children were divided into 4 classes, of which there were two age groups: 6-9 and 10-14; each group had a morning class and an afternoon class.
This year we returned to MacDonough School, right here in the North End. This produced many benefits, one of which was the proximity to other facilities. The Green Street Arts camp group walked from MacDonough to Green Street Art Center daily and was able to utilize The Buttonwood Tree for a break in between their classes. The children played the instruments at TBT (piano, drums, guitar), checked out the artwork and read books.
Teachers this year did a fabulous job – Shane Grant who taught the Art Tech class, and Lauren Agnelli who taught Troubadour class. They produced many delightful works of art, some of which can be found at TBT still. The 12 page newspaper, “The Inside Scoop” was made in Troubadour and can also be found at TBT and around town. They also wrote songs, dance routines and played homemade instruments.
We presented our show, “The Reveal” to the community on August 4th, the last day of camp. It was a wonderful display of talents and we had a great time singing along. The last number, “Let it Be” by The Beatles, was a heartwarming rendition, as sung by students, parents and friends alike.
Applications for next year’s camp will be available in the spring at the MCA and Park and Rec office in Riverview Plaza.
